The Complete Guide to US SMS Marketing: Shortcode, Toll-Free, and 10DLC Differences and How to Choose the Best One

Apr 23, 2026

In the US market, SMS has a significantly higher open rate than email and is a powerful channel that influences e-commerce sales. However, one problem that you inevitably face before starting to send SMS messages is "what type of phone number to use."

In the United States, SMS spam is very common, and if you randomly select a number, your message may be mistaken for spam and not opened, or there is a risk that the message will not be delivered at all (a decrease in delivery rate).

While various resources offer a wide range of information online, this article, written by a North American resident, will provide the latest information on SMS marketing in the US market in 2026.

1. Short Code: A standard for large brands

A Short Code is a short combination of five or six digits.

merit

  • Outstanding throughput (transmission speed): Hundreds to thousands of emails can be delivered per second. Essential for situations like Black Friday sales where you need to send notifications to tens of thousands of customers simultaneously.
  • Highest reliability and deliverability: Because we pre-screen (provision) the content to be delivered with carriers, it is less likely to be filtered and will reliably reach the user's smartphone.
  • Brand Awareness: It's easy to remember, and it's easy to promote the brand through offline media such as TV commercials, magazines, and outdoor advertising, with messages like "Send 'SALE' to 55555!"

Demerit

  • High costs: Lease fees range from several hundred dollars to over a thousand dollars per month for maintenance.
  • Length of preparation period: Obtaining a plan requires approval from the carrier, and it typically takes 8 to 12 weeks before you can start using it.

2. Toll-free: Currently the best balanced option.

These are toll-free numbers that begin with "800," "833," "888," etc., and cover the entire United States.
It's like "0120" in Japan.

merit

  • High cost performance: The monthly fee is significantly lower than Short Code, and setup can be completed in a day or a few days.
  • Business credibility: Americans have a well-established perception that "800s = official company number," resulting in a stable open rate.
  • The peace of mind that comes with verified numbers: In recent years, the mandatory verification process for toll-free numbers has made it possible to maintain a high deliverability rate if registered correctly.

Demerit

  • Transmission speed limitations: While far more powerful than 10DLC, it's not suitable for the ultra-high-speed mass distribution required for Short Code.

3. 10DLC (10-Digit Long Code): Currently a "limited" feature.

This is a standard 10-digit phone number that begins with the local area code.

In Japan, the first three digits of a phone number, such as "080" or "090," are the same regardless of the region. However, in North America, the area code is determined by the area where the phone number is obtained, and the first three digits of this code allow you to identify which region the phone number belongs to.

For example, in the downtown LA area, it would be "213".

merit

  • Locality: Having a specific regional number allows businesses that are deeply rooted in the local community (such as real estate, education, and beauty salons) to create a sense of familiarity with customers.

Demerit

  • Strict sending limits: There is generally a limit of about "one email per second," making it unsuitable for mass emailing for marketing purposes.
  • Complex registration process: Due to spam prevention measures, a very complex brand and campaign registration process called "A2P 10DLC registration" is now required, making it much less convenient than before.
  • Deprecated trend: Currently, it is not common for new e-commerce brands to distribute large quantities of content using 10DLC due to the high risk of restrictions from carriers.

4. [Comparison Summary] Which number should you choose?

In conclusion, the current mainstream options are either "Short Code" or "Toll-free".
With these two options, you can also obtain the number from the Klaviyo administration screen.
