[Shopify × AI] Interactive commerce with "AI agents" that e-commerce operators should know about now: The importance of AI SEO and Knowledge Base

Apr 23, 2026

"Can you suggest a perfect Mother's Day gift under 5000 yen?"

Have you ever asked ChatGPT a question like this? E-commerce is currently undergoing a dramatic transformation from "search" to "dialogue."

This time, we'll delve into the integration of Shopify and AI agents, which is currently being implemented in the US, and the practical aspects of "AI optimization" that we should be preparing for now.

1. From "searching" to "being suggested": The true nature of AI agent collaboration

Recently, Shopify announced enhanced integration with its AI agent. Products sold on Shopify can now be automatically learned by the AI and discovered by it.

As of April 2026, this is limited to Shopify stores selling in the United States, and integration with ChatGPT, Gemini/Google AI Mode, and Microsoft Copilot has been announced. (Gemini/Google AI Mode and Copilot are only available for stores based in the United States.)

What will change?

Until now, shopping involved users performing a "keyword search" on a search engine and "selecting" items from a list. However, with this integration, users will be able to complete their shopping simply by conversing with AI.

Gemini/Google AI Mode and Microsoft Copilot enable a smoother checkout process with "Shopify-powered built-in checkout," meaning the AI agent and Shopify work together directly. This feature is currently (as of April 2026) only available to US-based stores.

Restrictions in the standard plan

Currently, Shopify's AI integration is limited to the US, but given Shopify's past update speed, it's expected to be rolled out to other countries, including Japan, very soon. The moment this feature is released, whether or not a product can be "discovered" by the AI will become a crucial factor in determining sales.

2. The new standard in e-commerce operations: "AI SEO (AI Engine Optimization)"

When AI suggests products, what criteria does it use to select them? This is where the key question becomes:AI SEOThis is the concept (or GEO: Generative Engine Optimization).

Traditional SEO involved scattering keywords to target Google's algorithm. However, with AI SEO, the key is whether the AI can correctly understand the brand and product and treat it as a reliable source of information.

  • Accuracy and reliability of information: Brands need to provide data that proves "this is correct" to prevent AI from conveying false information.
  • Semantic search: AI doesn't just pick up keywords in parts, but understands the content from the context. There's no need to stick to specific keywords; let the AI learn to give concise and relevant answers in natural language.
  • Q&A Format: AI has the advantage of easily processing data in a Q&A format, where it answers questions asked by users. That's where the following app comes in handy!

3. Taking the first step in practical application: Utilizing the official app "Knowledge Base"

Shopify is preparing for this AI era with free "Knowledge BaseWe have released an app called "[App Name]". This is a tool that e-commerce operators should implement immediately to provide AI with accurate information and knowledge about brands and products!

Specific actions that operators should take

This app will be used to store "AI-dedicated Q&A data" in the store's backend. This is different from the FAQ pages displayed on the store; the FAQ data registered in the Knowledge Base app will be stored in an AI-readable format solely for the purpose of training the AI.

  • Brand description: Information such as "Where is the company located?", "What is the brand's founding background?", and "What are its sustainability initiatives?" is used to help the AI recognize these aspects.
  • Product Details Supplement: We've added a Q&A section to address specific questions that aren't fully covered in the product description, such as "Can this material be machine washed?" and "Is it suitable for sensitive skin?"
  • Policy-related FAQs: We're also training the AI to answer questions users might have before purchasing, such as "Are there shipping fees?" and "Is it possible to return items?", so that it can provide accurate answers when users ask.

This dramatically increases the likelihood that the AI will use your store's data as the "official answer" when responding to user questions.

Caution!) This measure will not suddenly increase your visibility on AI like paid advertising does. By providing accurate and comprehensive information, just like with regular SEO, you will be more likely to be recommended in appropriate situations in the medium to long term.

4. Summary: Taking action early is best.

The AI agent-driven commerce experience is still in its early stages. However, it's best to get started early. AI is significantly accelerating Shopify's development speed, and we can expect many more updates in the future.

Structuring information using a "Knowledge Base" is painstaking work, but it forms a solid foundation for creating future "AI-driven sales."

  • Now is the time to teach AI what the "correct answer" for your own brand is.
  • Prepare for "interactive commerce" that lies beyond "search."

This is the strategic step that is required of the next generation of e-commerce operators.

GO RIDE can certainly accommodate this setup.
